Poker Plays 101: Bluffing Plays
A good poker strategy is one that concentrates on playing few great hands, but playing them aggressively. However, one will only have a miniscule chance of getting great hands frequently. Thus, one will need to perform bluffing plays in order to profit even without being dealt an excellent hand all the time.
Bluffing plays simply means to play aggressively despite holding a weak set of cards. If you get hold of an excellent hand each time, then there would be no need for bluffing plays. But since you will mostly get it only a few times in the course of a single game, you need to have a way to win even with inferior hands.
Bluffing plays employs playing aggressively. With an aggressive play, you have the chance to win without having the best card by having your opponents give up their hands. Also, raises and opens are often taken as a sign of hand strength. Players with drawing hands and mid-range hands will most often fold when they suspect a player with a superb hand.
It should be clear that bluffing plays can only succeed by doing one thing: forcing opponents to fold. Since a bluffing player is holding a weak hand, bringing it to showdown will be a disaster.
Thus, it would be a more optimal condition for bluffing if only a few players still remain in hand. And since you can only deduce the strength of your opponent's hand, it would be best if you perform a bluff if the board clearly shows that the remaining players' hands are unstable enough for them to give it up.
Bluffing plays also need to have a build up. If you play too tightly and aggressively, you will have a difficult time pulling off a bluff. This is because if you only play great made hands and excellent drawing hands, it is easy to see if you are betting only for value.
In contrast, if you bluff too often, your opponents will easily try to call off your bluff. They will call each raise and might even re-raise you. Once you are put in that situation, your only choice is to fold and give up the bluff.
Thus, a good mixture of bluffs and playing good hands are needed. If you are aware of poker mathematics, the best frequency for bluffing would be that which would somehow be equivalent to the pot odds of your opponents. Still, a good bluffing play could be pulled off successfully if you practice and get a feel of the game of poker itself.
